"Finally, Wells has published his famous online resource in book form. This volume belongs in every thinking person's library--and in every hotel room in America..." — SAM HARRIS, author of the New York Times bestsellers The End of Faith, Letter to a Christian Nation, The Moral Landscape, and Free Will.

Steve Wells often wondered why most people who claimed to believe in the Bible had never read it. But after reading it, he knew. The Bible reveals a cruel, self-centered god who commands, directs, and eagerly takes part in horrific and unconscionable acts. This prompted him to highlight and categorize the verses, including Cruelty and Violence, Misogyny, Absurdity, Injustice, Intolerance, Contradictions, Good Stuff, and more.

If you have always wanted to (or felt you should) read the Bible but just couldn't stomach it, read it with Steve. He highlights what you need to know, and shows you what parts of it you can skip. Now you have no excuse. Read it.

The Skeptic's Annotated Bible is the King James Version presented from a skeptic's point of view. Passages throughout the Bible are highlighted and categorized into the following 13 categories:

  1. Absurdity
  2. Injustice
  3. Cruelty
  4. Intolerance
  5. Good Stuff
  6. Contradictions
  7. Interpretation
  8. Misogyny
  9. Sex
  10. Prophecy
  11. Language
  12. Politics
  13. Homosexuality

The Skeptic's Annotated Bible includes an introduction to each book of the Bible. Here, for example, is the beginning of the introduction to the gospel of John:

The best known verse from the Bible, by far, is John 3:16. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

And that sounds nice, until you think about it. God had his own son tortured to death to prevent himself from torturing everyone else forever. Believe and you have life everlasting. Disbelieve and you are damned to hell. That is the message of the gospel of John.

What You Get & How It Reads

The Skeptic's Annotated Bible is the King James Version of the Bible, reproduced in full, with annotations by Steve Wells, who has studied and worked on the Bible for more than 35 years. Wells reads the text as it presents itself, highlighting what it actually says, including passages that are absurd, cruel, misogynistic, or unjust, as well as those that are good, and tagging each with one of 13 categories such as Cruelty, Contradictions, or Good Stuff.

Intended audience. This edition is written for skeptics, freethinkers, and anyone who wants to read the Bible without devotional framing. It assumes no prior theological background.

What it is not. This is not a devotional Bible and not a traditional faith-based study Bible. It does not include theological commentary or notes written to defend a particular doctrine. It presents the biblical text and Wells' annotations, letting readers see both the verses themselves and what they say.

Format. Printed book. Each book of the Bible opens with a short introduction by Wells.

I love this book. If you have any question and I do mean any question about the Bible, this is the book for you! This Bible will point out every contradiction, every injustice, the politics, etc. I was always told the Bible only has good in it and that’s what led me astray was that lie... Find the truth for yourself and this book is definitely your first step.

I never leave reviews, but after receiving my copy of "The Skeptic's Annotated Bible" I had to post about it.

The book itself is wonderful to hold, but the content inside is almost overwhelming. There is so much information included and it is all organized so well that it is relatively easy to locate whatever it is that you are looking for.

Everyone needs a copy of this book in their personal libraries.
